Years ago when I was first starting out in my business, I was reluctant to tell people that I was a sole proprietor working from my home. There was a stigma to it, like you didn’t have a “real” business. And if I did reveal it to someone, a common reaction was, “Oh, I could never work on my own from home. I’m afraid I’d be tempted to stay in my robe and slippers all day.” I never knew exactly how to respond to that. I mean, one of the advantages of being a solopreneur working from home is that you can have whatever dress code you want!

In the ensuing years, the solo practitioner working from home has become more and more commonplace in virtually any field. The benefits are many. I’ve identified “eight great traits of being a home-based solopreneur” that I’ve taken turns going into detail on:

1. Freedom

2. Flexibility

3. Lots of Variety

4. Less Stress

5. Lower Expenses

6. Tax Advantages

7. More Control over Personal Time

8. Relaxed Dress Code!

The focus of this article is on trait #8 – RELAXED DRESS CODE.

When I first started in my business, there was some nagging little voice in my head that told me to be dressed “nice” every day. After all, you never knew when someone might make a last-minute appointment or you might be out running an errand and run into a client. In fact, surely I’d read somewhere that your behaviors reflect your dress (sloppy attire = unprofessional behavior). But after about a year or two, I began to realize that how I functioned in my home office had much more to do with how much sleep I got than what I was wearing.

Before casual Friday was commonplace, before the dot com culture popularized jeans and t-shirts in the workplace, before business casual became the norm in workplaces across the country-I was “going to work” in everything from jeans, sweat pants, running shorts, and yes, even my pajamas. One time, my phone rang right after I stepped out of the shower. I couldn’t resist answering it, so yes, I can say, I’ve even done business in my birthday suit!

Don’t get me wrong. When I’m out doing my business or seeing clients or attending networking functions, I’m dressed professionally. Appearances do count. But when I’m in the privacy of my home office, working on the computer or talking on the phone, no one knows what I look like. So then, my comfort is what matters.

Tomorrow I have a morning appointment and an afternoon coaching session. I will be dressed in a professional business casual outfit with nice slacks, a top and unstructured jacket. My professionally cut hair will be perfectly styled, and my make-up carefully applied. But today, as I’ve finished up this and a few other articles, I’m wearing a pair of ugly shorts with an elastic waist, a sleeveless tank top, and ballet slippers. My hair is pulled back with a “scrunchy” and I have on no make-up.   Ahhh.

My pants don’t fit… I feel like an idiot… Am I nuts?

Im just shy of 10 weeks pregnant with baby #2. Right before we found out, I was wearing size 8 pants. Then a few weeks ago they became uncomfortable and I went to the only other size I had, 12. It’s just the area right where baby is, not my waste that is getting bigger…yet. After 3 days of wearing my size 12 slacks this week I started to get a stomach ache, so today I gave in, opened the old tote of maternity clothes and put on the maternity pants and maternity top to cover the elastic. I just don’t have the money to buy a belly band or larger clothes, its maternity or nothing. I remember with #1 I was SO HAPPY to put on maternity clothes and put them on probably before I needed them, but this time I feel like a bag lady. Am I nuts? Did anyone else feel this way?

The first time around I didnt wear maternity until about 5 months, of which I couldnt wait. With the second I was in maternity from almost the beginning, I feel like a fat cow. Most of us probably go through that. Congratulations and good luck.
