Why you should take DHA during Pregnancy

Have you read about this recently?  The subject of DHA during pregnancy began to become a subject of interest once it was discovered just how important a role this omega fatty acid plays in the cognitive development of infants.  What scientists wanted to know was whether supplementing the mother’s diet with omega fatty acids during the third trimester of pregnancy would help these children to developmentally advance.

The role of DHA on the cognitive development of infants and children prompted companies to begin adding this fatty acid to their infant formulas, and other food items.  DHA is an omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid, which is present within every cell within our bodies.  This nutrient is critical to the development and function of the brain, eyes, and central nervous system.

Supplementing your diet with additional DHA during pregnancy is important, because our main source of DHA is the foods that we eat.  Infants are dependent on the mother to supply them with the nutrients that they need while in the womb, and later on if the infant is sustained solely on breast milk.  Most pregnant women fail to get the recommended amount of DHA through their diets.

Deficiencies in this omega fatty acid can inhibit the cognitive development of your fetus, lead to visual impairment, increase the risk of premature deliveries, and make it more likely that you will suffer from postpartum depression.  If you are new to the idea of omega fatty acid supplementation, or have just never thought too much about it, consider the following:

Pediatrics journal published a 2003 study on DHA during pregnancy which stated that the children of women that supplemented their diets with this fatty acid scored higher on intelligence tests than the children of women who took no supplements.  There are other published studies that concur on the advanced abilities shown by children that had high DHA levels at birth.

These studies have shown that these children possessed advanced attention spans into the second year of their lives, and that during the first six months of their lives they were on average two months ahead of their peers whose mothers had low levels of DHA.  It is also suggested that that infants with high DHA levels have IQ’s six to ten points higher than DHA deficient infants.

As you can see, supplementing DHA during pregnancy is important to both you and your baby.  Your baby however has the most to gain by having higher levels of omega fatty acids in his or her system.  So, in order to ensure that your baby is receiving adequate levels of DHA, and is not unnecessarily exposed to toxic contaminants, I suggest a good fish oil supplement in lieu of eating actual fish.

Now that you know this, by using fish oil supplement to get your DHA during pregnancy you can verify what type of fish the oil came from, whether it came from a pure water source, and exactly what the level of each trace contaminants is.  This way you can make sure that the omega fatty acids in your child’s system are of the highest quality possible.
