A Modern Wrap On An Ancient Tradition – The Bellyco Belly Wrap

I can remember in vivid detail the day I gave birth to our first daughter. Although it is almost 11 years ago now, when I  think about that amazing experience, it is as though I am re-living the experience right here and now. No one can fully prepare you for that one moment, the moment your baby is born and you hold her in your arms.

There is also another moment during this special time that stands out in my memory. This moment is not commonly written about, discussed at anti natal visits or between friends. In fact it is often kept top secret, sort of a final surprise that you are also not fully prepared for!

After the endorphins have subsided and you have returned to earth you look down at what was once a rock hard pregnant belly and all that remains is loose wrinkly skin, not dissimilar to a giant deflated ballon, that from your vantage point, seems to hang to you knees. What’s this? Some sort of joke, not funny!!

Well I’m here to blow the lid off this secret and tell you that there is a solution for this saggy baggy situation. Here are 7 reasons why the ancient practice of postnatal abdominal binding or wrapping is a must as you make the transition into motherhood.

Post pregnancy belly wrapping has been around for eons

For centuries, women from many traditional cultures around the world have been wrapping their post pregnancy bellies as a natural postpartum recovery technique. This tradition has been handed down from generation to generation, from mother to mother and is believed to be an essential part in ensuring the physical and mental health of mothers after the birth of their babies.

Not only is it believed that constant increased pressure against the abdominal area reduces the size of the swollen uterus, flattens the belly and redefines the waistline helping you to get back into shape quickly and naturally, it has also been shown to give additional support to the legs and back all while providing much needed support for your postpartum belly.

Midwifes and Obstetrician Agree

Most modern day midwifes and obstetricians agree that wrapping the belly post delivery assists in postpartum recovery.

Here are just a few of the great benefits:

  • Minimises swelling
  • Aids in decreasing bloating caused by water retention

  • Reduces discomfort

  • Accelerates healing process

  • Repositions the uterus

  • Restores self confidence

Using a postnatal abdominal wrap can assist in recovery after a caesarean

New statistics show that around 40% of all babies born in Australia are via caesarean. For women who have had a caesarean, wearing a belly wrap accelerates the recovery process by allowing greater mobility, increasing blood circulation around the surgical area and supporting the abdominal tissues while they heal. Firm pressure on the belly has been shown to  diminish swelling, decrease associated incision pain and relieve uncomfortable pulling sensations.

The constant and reassuring support of an abdominal wrap designed for postnatal use will help minimize discomfort in the event of any sudden movement, sneezing or coughing.

Postnatal belly wrapping can assist in healing Diastasis Recti

Diastasis Recti is a common condition affecting approximately 15% of postpartum women. The condition is seen as a stretching and separation into right and left halves of the rectus abdominus muscle caused by the the growing uterus during pregnancy. Normally, the two sides of the muscle are joined at the body midline.

In postpartum women, the defect is seen when the abdominus recti muscles do not fully knit together after pregnancy, leaving a rather unsightly bulge of the stomach. This condition comes in varying degrees, from slight tearing to a full separation, which can give rise to herniation.

A postnatal belly wrap covers the lower abdomen which provides valuable relief by containing and supporting the abdomen, taking strain off the abdominal layers allowing them to heal without stress.

Belly binding can also assist recovery exercises by helping to encourage the muscles back together whilst also acting as a reminder to actively pull your belly back in toward your spine to engage your transverse abdominis.

Postnatal belly wrapping can help reduce additional stretch marks

Stretch marks are caused when the skin is pulled by rapid growth or stretching, resulting in tiny tears in the layers below the skins surface.

The loose excess skin of the postpartum belly can result in additional stretch marks due to the lack of abdomen support pulling and stretching the skin further.

Postnatal belly wrapping offers support of this loose skin, counteracting stress and tension on the skin thereby minimising the development of additional stretch marks in the postpartum period.

Using a post pregnancy belly wrap is catching on

Over the past few years belly wrapping has been gaining popularity in the western world. Many women including high profile celebrities contribute the use of a belly wrap to their flat post pregnancy bellies. Here are just a few who have enjoyed the benefits:

Nicole Kidman

Angelina Jolie

Jessica Alba

Gwen Stefani

Brook Burke

Jamie Lynn Spears

Jennifer Garner
