Baby Name Cyril

Looking for Yourself?
LOOKING FOR YOURSELF
The economy is in shambles. Your job has disappeared and you certainly feel helpless. Looking for someone, anyone to at least give you a boost. I wrote an article earlier entitled “somewhere out there”. I have had so many feedbacks on that article so I thought I would just sit down at recall my own personal situation.
I was born in 1935. Not a depression baby, but never the less, we were a family of nine children living in a three bedroom flat on the East side of Detroit. The water heater was located on our first floor and the Turzak family lived on the second floor. When they needed hot water for bath nights, they would bang on the water pipe and that was our signal that the Turzak girls were going to have their Saturday night bath. Once they were done, it was our turn.
Now, with three girls and six boys my, Mom had to be a logistical expert and make sure that there was enough warm (by this time) water for all of the kids to get bathed. We had a big bathtub, like a metal tub that my parents would slide into the kitchen so that it was near the water faucet and the stove.
Naturally, the little one’s got their bath first. Since, I was the next to the oldest boy, my turn came last and I had to take a bath in the same water that my younger brothers had. We would climb out of that tub and Mom would wrap us with a towel and we had to go to our bedroom and get our pajamas on.
Once we were ready for bed, Dad would allow us to sit up and listen to the radio on those Saturday nights. We would listen to Major Bowles, The Green Hornet and The Inner Sanctum. We didn’t have a TV because they weren’t invented yet.
Muntz came out with a TV just around the time the war was ending. My, Uncle lived in the first block and he would allow my Dad to bring the boys over to his house on Tuesday evenings and watch the Texaco Star Theatre and maybe some wrestling.
Were those bad times? Nah, they were very enriching times. We used to go to the Church at St Cyril’s & Methodius twice a week because the women of the Altar Society were serving homemade bean soup and fresh bread. It was very good and everyone from the parish took advantage of this “soup kitchen” without being embarrassed. This was the manner in which families were able to make their dollars stretch.
I remember, when we would get a hole in the bottom of our shoes, my Mom, would fold up some newspaper and put it on the inside of the shoe so that our feet wouldn’t get wet. After school, when Dad came home from the factory, he would get his shoe lass and cut some new soles and repair our shoes. Every family did this.
One of the things that I distinctly remember about growing up, was my Mom would make all of us children sit at the dinner table and wait for my Dad to say “Grace”. Once all of the children had their plates full of food, my Mom would sit next to my Dad and they would eat off of the same plate. We never thought anything about this until I brought a friend home to eat with us. He pulled me on the side later and said “If your Mom needs a dish to eat from, I am sure that my Mom will give her an extra one”. I never thought about it but years later, we all cherished the “love” that our parents showed toward each other.
Mom, lived to be (102) and was never sick a day in her life. I will never forget seeing her at her table in the morning with her prayer book and saying her morning prayers. When she died, we all knew that she was destined for something bigger and better.
In my earlier article, I talked about the death of my wife, Roseanne. I don’t know many husbands that have had the “God given” pleasure of holding their wife’s hands and watching life slip away. Morbid? Only if you think like that. I thought it was a “beautiful” gift from God to be able to see that certain “glow and look in her eyes” when she looked at me and said “I am going now”.
I relate to that, because today, we are faced with the dismantling of the “ferris wheel” of finance and fun that we have been accustomed to for so long. Because, money has replaced our belief in someone bigger than us, we don’t know what to do or where to turn to as a result of it.
I recently read a quip about prisoners in jail and the most sought after book in the prison library is the “Holy Bible”. Why was it, immediately after the disaster on the Twin Towers in New York that the entire nation got together and prayed on TV, Radio and in the streets? Is it only because we as a society realized that our life is so short and it can be taken away in a flash.
I can only relate to you what I have done to cope with the reality of life. If, it helps you, help someone else. If it doesn’t fit your fancy, then by all means, skip it because I didn’t charge you one dime to read this.
When, I returned from burying my wife, I was all alone in the condo. The cancer wiped out all of my money. I was broke. How does a (65) year old recover. The only income was social security. When I read that passage in the bible on the day of my wife’s death, I knew then and there I was given a message.
I looked up at the crucifix that we had in our condo and I said to the man upstairs, My Lord, “Okay, you took Roseanne at the young age of (57) and left me. Why” I thought for a minute and then said “Okay, you have a job. I will continue her work of helping people and you have to provide. I am not going to worry about money”. That was in 1999 and here it is almost ten years later and I still don’t worry about money. I just look for things to help people with.
A little corny? Only if you are lost and don’t know where to turn to. As, I said in another article, we never chastised anyone for their personal beliefs. But in today’s troublesome world, there is a door for you to enter. All you have to do is get curious and believe that “somewhere out there” is a sign for you.
