How To–Move Along With a Baby On Board
No, “the baby†in question isn’t a significant other complaining about moving or a teenaged child acting like a baby. It’s a child less than six months old.
It’s a well known fact that a baby feels your emotions. If you’re smiling, the odds are after awhile, you’ll see a smile form on your baby’s face. But if you’ve stressed from the move, the baby will similarly be stressed, which means more crying–which plops even more stress on your already full plate. That’s why it’s doubly important for the move to be organized and orderly.
One way of keeping the stress level low is to have someone watch your baby while you focus on the move; especially the “packing part.†As you pack and prepare, your baby, the child (as well as your family’s pet for that matter), should be with a person he or she is very familiar and comfortable with. This would include a family member, a close friend or the baby’s regular babysitter. If possible, the baby and her or his temporary caretaker should not be present for the often chaotic move. When the packing and the move is completed, welcome your baby back with open arms. The short estrangement can be tough going but it’s better than having to deal with a crying baby in the middle of a move.
Of course, there are upsides of having a baby six months of age and younger when you’re moving. Unlike 2-17 year olds, babies aren’t terribly affected by moving into a new home. They’re fine as long as they’re with their parents, are fed and have enough sleep.
If possible, make sure the baby’s room in your new home is set up. If you can’t go there and set it up yourself, then have someone do it for you. The “new set up†should look like the old set up. That is, the new room should VERY closely resemble the baby’s room in the old house. Still, a new house is a new house, so expect the baby to be restless and possibly sleepless the first few nights. Of course, this isn’t much of an issue if the baby sleeps with you.
Also, make sure you don’t inadvertently pack up the child’s favorite toy or blanket or bottle.
For slightly older babies, especially ones just learning and/or starting to walk, you’ll face new challenges. You can keep their interest up and get them excited about the move by photographing the new home, downloading it on a computer and showing them it. This will give them a “sneak peak†at the new home.
For children that are over two years old, you can also print these pictures, give them crayons or paint and have them “paint†their new home. They can do this during the plane or car ride to the new home or while they are still at their old home. If they are in the 3-4 year old age range, they can take these pictures and show them to their daycare friends.
If you play all your cards right and, with this added information about moving children-and you can hopefully make moving child’s play.
