Baby Modeling Agency San Diego
Nobody told us that when we have a baby we have to learn a whole new vocabulary. Yet terms like, “Kegel,” “cervix,” and “Hypnobirthing” become oft repeated words over the next nine months. Once the baby has arrived, even more words are added to our jargon. One that relates to breastfeeding is “let down.” Sounding more like a bad mood someone puts us in; a let down is when, as we are actually nursing the baby, the milk rushes to fill his or her mouth. Or in a confusing way, a let down can occur even when you have no baby in your arms! How does this happen? The body is so amazing! Who knew our bodies knew to do so many things automatically? The mechanism from latch to let down looks like this:
- The baby opens his mouth and correctly latches onto the breast.
- The mouth’s suckling stimulates nerves in your nipples, nerves that lead right to the brain.
- Your brain receives the message that a baby is nursing and releases the hormone oxytocin (the natural, gentler version of the induction medication Pitocin).
- Oxytocin saturates the muscles around your milk glands and they squeeze the ducts, pressing the milk out in a rush of nutrition for your baby.
The let down reflex might or might not be felt. Most women will feel the first let down, but the subsequent ones are often less noticeable. It is normal if a woman never feels a let down. If the baby starts sputtering (if she is a newborn) or gulping, you are having a let down without even knowing it. The let down needs some time to get coordinated the same way it can take a few days to get the hang of breastfeeding. There is not anything you can do to “fix” or change the let down beyond making sure the baby is nursing properly. It can be shocking when you have a let down and the baby is not even latched on! It’s true, sometimes just hearing a baby cry can be enough to stimulate the let down chain of events. The body is so amazing as it works to prepare the breasts for feeding the baby. If you experience a let down and are not nursing, here are a couple of ways for you to stop the let down from soaking your shirt.
- Use your wrists and press them into your nipples. Press hard and that can stop the flow of milk quickly. One way to not be so obvious in public is pretend you are cold and are trying to get warm.
- Cross your arms across your chest, again pretending you are cold, “hugging” yourself with your forearms putting pressure on your breasts.
When you experience a let down, know you are still feeling great and are doing the exact right thing to feed your baby the best food in the world.
