Trying to learn ASL signing, but need help on broadening my ability & understanding?

I am trying 2 learn 2 “sign” on my own. I memorized the “Baby’s 1st book of signing” & the alphabet in 3 days (vocab= 350 words & nothing else)BG DEAL! I am grasping that it isnt a direct translatation of English sentances or statements, how facial & body lang R big part. Ive gt boks, 1 on ‘phases’ w/ dictionry of signs, deaf cult & mor, but othr book is bad choice 4 self teaching. I am devoid of income, so cant “buy” tapes, dont know if library has any 2 lend, but I feel I need 2 actually “sign/talk’ w/ someone who is proficient & willing 2 help. Schools = $$$$, found software avail online, but most want $$$ & those that claim 2 B free require MUCH more than $$$.!
This is imprt 2 me, I am NOT deaf, my disabilies R difrent, but ASL has ALWAYS been of intrest 2 me & now I cant work, so want 2 put my time 2 good use. Who knows, since my old career is gone even if I get well, mayB I can translate or help othrs in some way. I am in L.A., CA area. Any Ideas or suggestions?
